Day 13: 14/07/2009 Mt. Ebeneezer to Alice Springs

Arrived at Alice Springs after short drive. Disappointed that 'Dinky the Singing Dingo' was in his dressing room at Stuart Wells and did not perform. Reminded Pam of 'Shaq the Shitting Spaniel'. We're in a nice caravan park just at The Gap, about five minutes from CBD. Met Darren and Shane at the pub adjacent to the park. Dazza's a strapper/ glazier (little specialisation in the Territory) and Shane's the local race caller. Relived Shane's proudest call: "number three's further back than a sausage dog's sack." Slipped past the censors, apparently. Darren knew Scott Leckey and was pleased to hear of his slow but steady recovery. Got a laugh when I told him about Scott getting off the Morwell train in his wheelchair and being seen motoring up the Princess highway to CGE Hire to visit his father, Tommy.

  1. Read Shane's proudest call 4 times before I got it. (We speak the same language but...; had some interesting and embarrassing misunderstandings in China, where we don't.) Googled Scott Leckey: Scott Leckey back at CheltenhamArticle from: SIMON WHITE February 12, 2009 11:30pm
SIMON Price scored a Saturday double in the saddle last weekend but it was the sight of Scott Leckey walking into the Cheltenham jockeys' room that brought the biggest smile to his face. Leckey, who finished runner-up in the metropolitan jockeys' premiership in 2005-06, had not been trackside in Adelaide since suffering life-threatening injuries in a shocking fall at Darwin in July 2007. "He's done a great job to get where he is - it's been a really long rehab process for him," jockeys' association president Price said.
