Day 19: 20/07/2009 Tennant Creek to Mataranka

Travelled from Tenant Creek to Mataranka, new longest travel day, 597 km. Stopped at Renner Springs for fuel and coffee, then Dumarra for lunch and more fuel. There was a young couple who had obviously stayed the night. The young bloke was looking pretty ill, due to his long session at the bar. One of the roadtrain drivers complained he had spent $150 on beer the night before. That's about 43 of them at the prices he was paying, one every three or four minutes. The young bloke put his head down on the table and shut up. Pam had a bit of excitement being overtaken by a three-load road train. The first two went by OK, but the third tried to drive Pam off the road. They're too big to argue with. Probably wasn't the driver with the 43 beer load.Caravan park is really nice with big outdoor beergarden and bistro.

When we arrived, hot and tired at around 4pm, we were struck by large amounts of very calm people in bathers, regardless of age or physique, wandering back from the track in the palms. We decided to investigate, found heavenly spring-fed thermal pool, right on body temperature. People just stand there or float, chat, or stare vacantly, we found the tranquillity.

  1. Tranquility after terror, much needed. Life lessons on this journey, I see.
