Day 25, 26/7/2009, Katherine

Final day in Katherine. Did nice touristy things in and around the town.

Started with a visit to a rock shop that sold rocks of various kinds. Saw a large assortment of rocks. I start to realise that rocks come in many different sizes and shapes. (and colours, too.)

Visitied the hot springs (by car this time) and had a really nice lounge in the warm water. There's a little falls where the water bubbles up. Makes a sort of natural spa bath. It's the sort of place where strangers ask each other what the rich people are doing.

Visited the Springfield Homestead where heroic efforts in the late 1800's brought thousands of sheep and cattle from Adelaide. We've done the same trip in a car and occasionally found it tiring. They travelled 5 km. or so per day and then had to water the stock. Must have been really, really hard work. They picked the spot for the homestead because of the ready supply of water, timber and stone for building. (See my previous comments re rocks.)

The mistress of the homestead planted a rain tree for each her children. They now provide a beautiful canopy over the area. The place seems like a storybook ending to an heroic tale. One saltie-in-the-meat-department though: There was no way to get wool from Katherine to a market anywhere and no market for beef at all. The place wound up broke and abandoned.

I wonder if they used my financial adviser. The one who told me in 2007 "Sell? No don't sell. The share market's fine."

Finished the day with a visit to an art museum. They had a fine assortment of old satellite antennas and a fine looking pet emu. The emu and I saw eye-to-eye on most things we discussed.

Final travellers tip: Katerine pubs are all but deserted on Saturday and Sunday. Barman explained that for many attendees, all money is gone by COB Friday.
