Day 8: 9/07/2009 Kulgera to Uluru

Thirty five years ago when I travelled up here, we camped, along with a bunch of others, right at the base of the Rock. Not anymore. You need to be in the Yulara Resort. It appears that if you want a powered site, you need to book a week ahead. Unpowered site is fine though. The whole area is resorty, but blends in pretty well to the environment. (Apparently not, though, if you're Pitjantjatjara.) Where we were held three caravans and about 10 trailer-campers or tents. The big hotels have a bar each but only one sells takeaway. You need to have a pass to buy a drink and the price is very steep. Apparently this benefits the local population in some obscure way. Uluru actually means "Land-of-the-$6.10-takeaway-stubby-and$33.00-per-night-unpowered-caravan-site" in Pitjantjatjara. A short walk up the hill gives a nice view of "The Rock".
Had a small stuffup at tea time. I turned off the wrong burner on the stove. Omelette makings were incinerated. I must check our caravan insurance to see if it covers 'stupidity'. The neighbour had a good stuffup story: (actually it was his wife told the story) He's driving his brother's diesel campervan. Accidently filled it with unleaded! I felt only slightly less stupid, but everything helps.
