Day 38, 8 August 2009, Kununurra

As it was Saturday, Dan gave up his spare time to take us around in his boat about 30 km. towards Lake Argyle.

We saw fresh water crocodiles (the friendly kind), lots of birds and travelled through great rock gorges. We finished on a small sandy beach that we had to ourselves.

Until Bill and his friend John turned up. Bill's my age (61) and drives a tractor for Dan's company. Bill made it clear he worked 'with' Dan, not 'for' Dan. His beard was about 400 mm long and tied up in three or four places. I felt like shaving in shame.

Bill and John had a evening of culture planned, with Four X cans, a bottle of sherry and a bottle of OP rum. Bill's boat had a healthy collection of empty Four X cans, no doubt to be used as flotation devices in the event of a sinking.

The return up the river was just as spectacular, and night fell before we docked. I removed the bugs from my excuse for a beard and we went off to our next adventure, which was:

Dinner and beer tasting at Jackie's and Glen's.

Glen went through Melbourne Uni. with Dan and is a fellow forester. Jackie is a skilled artist and we are bringing back one of her paintings. We met other friends, including neighbours who run a small mango farm. More food, drinks and pleasant conversations

Then the serious part of the evening began. We were given score sheets and several plastic cups with various brands of beer. (I got one right by filling all of the lines with 'Melbourne Bitter'. )

Two of the ladies won, getting four of the eight correct. Beck was able to tell the beers apart by smelling them, which I considered cheating.

Pam and I didn't stay to the end. (It was my turn to drive back to Dan's which made full participation in the beer tasting tricky.)
