Day 54, 24 August 2009, Exmouth

Despite our dodgy fuel pump we decided to take a drive out out to Shothole Canyon.
Looked to be 14+ km. on the map but in reality was 15 km. on the bitumen, then 13 km. of dirt road. A bit fate tempting, but it turned out OK.
Visitors to Exmouth need to be careful in their pronunciation of 'Shothole' just like visitors in Gippsland need to pronounce 'Buchan' properly.
The canyon is really nice, with big limestone cliffs. Too bad we didn't take the camera... or drinking water. And we were out of phone range. And we were 13 ks down a dead-end dirt road. I really wonder about us sometimes.

Pam's ankle prevented her from walking around too much but we enjoyed the outing anyway. In the afternoon we enjoyed a coffee in the main street and ran into my acquaintance from Traralgon that we had previously run into in Alice Springs. I'll refrain from commenting on the size of the world.

As part of the preparation for my planned scientific paper "Australian Pubs Outside of the Traralgon Area", I finished the afternoon over a friendly chat and a pint of Carlton Draught. One of the local footy players came in wearing a slightly inebriated smile and a grand final medalion. Exmouth defeated Canarvon on the weekend, by several goals, I was told. Pondering the great distances between anywhere and anywhere-else on the North West Cape, I asked what towns were in the competition.
It turns out Exmouth has a side and there are four teams in Canarvon, making a total competition of five. When I looked up the team in the Internet (Exmouth Eagles), I found the 2009 fixture http://wafootyforum.yuku.com/topic/5239/t/GASCOYNE-2009-RESULTS.html. For most of the season, there were only four sides.

Anyway, when we make our way down to Canarvon, I plan to polish up my Victorian number plate and wear a Exmouth Eagles footy jumper. That should get me an interesting welcome.
