Day 63, 2 September 2009, Kalbarri

The main activity today was a visit to some of the river gorges in Kalbarri National park.

They're about 10 km. out of the town, then another 25 km. on a dirt road. The road's in good nick, and no problem for the Commodore.
Two unusual things:
1. The road was yellow, not red. (I had started to believe that all dirt is red, but this place woke me up to myself.) and
2. The dirt didn't raise dust. No cloud behind; no getting blinded when some hoon in a 4x4 overtakes. Very unusual.
Pam had a great idea, taking stuff for a nice picnic. We enjoyed it after one of our walks. Our walking was a bit limited, with Pam's ankle/ foot still getting better. We were mildly embarrassed to encounter people in their eighties who had just done the 8 k. walk: "We'll have a nice cuppa tea, now, Agnes!" We limited ourselves to a small number of 1-1.5 km.return walks. All were spectacular and at Z Bend we discovered where all the flies in Australia go for winter.
Over my end-of-the-day researches, I asked the barmaid about the pictures of a serious bush fire mounted over the bar. She didn't know, neither did the publican. When asked only one of the locals remembered being there at the time. He thought it might have been 1987. Wouldn't it be good to live in a place where nobody can remember the last bad bushfire?

  2. These photos are amazing. Very expansive. On this day we had Open Day at school and I got to speak to about 180 people in 2 and 1/2 hours!

    What different lives we lead.

You are going to have such treasures to share with us when you return.
