Had a short drive from Geraldton to Cevantes.
Cervantes is a small, sleepy coastal town of a couple of thousand. It was quiet during our visit, but I understand it gets really busy during summer. One of the non-beach features of the place is called the Pinnacles.
The Pinnacles (unlike its namesake in Victoria) is a flat desert-like area with thousands of rock fingers sticking out of the ground. The Aboriginal legend says that the area was forbidden, contained quicksand, and the rock formations are the fingers of naughty boys who went there even though their mums told them not to.
An alternate explanation is that they are petrified trees. Some certainly looked like anthills to me, but what do I know.
The park is set out really well. There's a 1-2 km. walk around and through it, then you can get your car and drive through it. I refrained from asking what the fastest recorded lap time was. Pam rolled her eyes at that thought. (Pam seems to roll her eyes a lot at things I say. Maybe she needs to see an opthomologist when we get back.)
After touring the rocks, we got back to Cerventes, we noticed that the power was off. It went off about 1:30 in the afternoon and stayed off till around 7:00. The pub stayed open, but the cook was worried about the $15,000 worth of meat he had sitting in the freezer. The cook also looked longingly at my beer. "If it's not back on by seven, I'll have to cancel dinner," he told the barmaid. Hopefully, I thought.
The two other barmaids who, after reporting for duty, were told their services were not required, seemed delighted. After a couple of quick UDLs, they called a bloke named John on speakerphone, so all the other patrons could hear. They asked if they could come over for a party. John agreed with considerable enthusiasm. The call ended, the ladies raided the bottleshop and were off. None too quick for John, I suspected.
As the sun set, the bar emptied and I returned to the caravan. We can operate on gas or the car battery so power was no problem for us.
We finished the day with a nice meal followed by an episode of "Boston Legal", one of Pam's favourites.
I climbed the Pinnacle in Victoria (8 months ago!); got a certificate that proves it. Maybe I could climb these Pinnacles in Cevantes with stair-steps except for the quicksand. / UDL beer gin & tonic can in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane (thx google)/ Love Boston Legal too Pam!
ReplyDeleteI remember visiting the Pinnacles way back when but I don't think there was any kind of defined path to follow. Must get the old slides out.
