Day 41, 11 August 2009, Fitzroy Crossing to Broome

Had a fairly short drive from Fitzroy Crossing to Broome. (431 k)

We tried to extend our stay past four days but were told that the caravan park was fully booked till the 23rd of August.

Pat, whose interest in nature is usually not evident, has become besotted with boab trees (they're deciduous, I found out the hard way, I hate that song, who would have thought). Our journey was punctuated with regular sightings. Pat also is very excited about road trains (I just experience a well-earned fear) and has provided some video. The road was very straight, good to have some diversions, for Pat anyway. We had hoped to enjoy radio national on this trip, but access to any radio is very limited. Guess we are really in the back of beyond.

As we often do when we first arrive, after setting up the caravan, we headed into the town to have a squiz, buy some groceries and have some lunch. Apparently 'Broome' means 'Land of the $1.60 dim-sim' in Yawuru. The Indian ocean is an amazing shade of blue! Sea breeze is evident, not as hot here, don't feel need to wear hat at all times, like Kununurra, still very salubrious.

Later in the day Pat tried a couple of pubs (sociological research, quite demanding, and now national) and we had a nice meal in the van. We found two big days of driving a bit tiring, we are in the codger zone, will relax with thrillers in the comfort and security of "the van". Feel a bit guilty to the gods of tourism, Cable beach is over the road, have not set foot. Need minds to catch up to where bodies are. May be suffering from the dreaded "caravan-lag", having crossed the WA border only recently, immediate time-jump forwards of 90 minutes, (plus loss of vegies and fruit) are we older, younger? Need to read thrillers in van.

  1. Hi Pammy Wammy

Sounds like you are totally au fait with the van now. And not missing everyone too much? Your holiday just sounds like such a dream. Just think of all the cold weather you are missing.

Love the movie segments you are sending. I managed to help Dad over the phone the other night to read your blog and view the crocodile movies. It was very cool to hear his response.

We are so lucky to be connected in this way.

    love

  2. Let the minds catch up to where the bodies are, well said. Thrillers in the van, hooray!
