Day 59, 29 August 2009, Shark Bay

Started the day at the Carnarvon Market, held at the back of the Information Centre. Pam bought some sweet corn and chutney stuff for her father.
As the crow (or mudlark, emu, Mallee Fowl, Tawney Frogmouth etc.) flies, its 115 km. from Carnarvon to Denham on Shark Bay. By road, it's 347 km. But who cares. Same old spinifex until the turnoff at Overland Roadhouse, then a great drive through the World Heritage Listed national park. Brief glimpses of white sand beaches, blue-green bays etc. Really nice.

Reluctantly skipped the turnoff to Useless Loop, where, I found out later, the make some of the best salt in the world. I'm not sure how one kind of salt can be better than another, but apparently the Useless Loop variety has won the Siberian National Salt Championships four years running. (I made up the last part. But it's supposed to be really, really good salt.)
Anyway.
Arrived in Denham to temperatures about 20 degrees colder than we're used to and a howling (30-40 knot) wind. Found out that Denham is a Malganya word for "Land of the $20 admission (with Seniors discount) to the Information Centre."
Fortunately I was able to find shelter from the weather in a sturdy building with a Four X sign out the front.

  1. The Siberian National Salt Championships made sense to me...

  2. Useless Loop was named after a frustrated lover who found out that it didn't work.

The partner was sent to the Siberian Salt mines, which cured his requirement for sex - another way to solve the reproduction problem.

Will show you the photo when you return.
